Hi,
I'd like to tell you how much Botany in a Day has helped and is helping me as I learn to identify plants. I retired to Panama and decided that I finally had time to learn the names of the plants that are all around me. I knew nothing about botany or taxonomy so just did a general search for books that sounded like they might be written for people who are teaching themselves. Botany in a Day was one of the 3 books I started with.
I liked the concept from the beginning - learn a few important families by learning key features and build on that. I was somewhat concerned that learning about Montana families might not help me much, but in fact, it has helped. First, the principle approach helped. Then, I found that many of the families in the book are indeed found in the tropics. For instance, I used Tom's characteristics of the Milkweed family to simplify my thinking about how to recognize the tropical milkweed.
Thanks!
